Free is a Long Way from Paid

You got people to read your free blog, listen to your free podcast, spend time in your free community or use your free tool. That’s great. You’ve accomplished something that eludes most.

But don’t start counting your chickens just yet. Going from free to paid can be a long hard road.

Whether you can turn those hard-earned visitors into even harder-earned customers depends on a lot of factors: how many of them are there? How much do they care about this subject? How deeply do they know, like and trust you? What are you selling? How good are you at selling it?

It’s easy to set high expectations because you have a “flood of visitors” or a “highly engaged community.” But visitors can be fleeting, especially when you start charging for something that was only really worthwhile when it was free.

Going from free to paid isn’t impossible, but you have to give this challenge the expectations it deserves. Expect for this to be hard. Expect for it to take a long time. Expect that you’ll think about giving up.

Stick with the challenge long enough, and you can turn those visitors into paying customers. Just don’t forget to keep caring about them along the way.
